Fisheries Extension, Economics & Statistics

Introduction

The department was initially functioning as two different departments i.e. Department of Fisheries Extension and Department of Fisheries Economics since the year 2015. For administrative reasons and to avoid overlapping of functional interests, in the year 2017- 18, the aforesaid departments were conglomerated as one single department i.e., Department of Fisheries Extension, Economics and Statistics.

Objectives of the Department

  • To disseminate technologies in aquaculture and fisheries through training programmes and linkage with the respective departments
  • To organise and conduct distance education courses in aquaculture and fisheries subjects
  • To provide quality service to the farmers through single window operation through the Fisheries Technology and Information Centre (FTIC)
  • To prepare extension publications such as manuals, pamphlets, flyer, etc.
  • To organise exhibition and to make radio and television programs to popularise aquaculture and fisheries technologies

Objectives

  • To serve as an interface between farmers and the institute.
  • To serve as single window service delivery center for the public.
  • To create database on the aquaculture and fisheries profile of Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts.

Works being done:

  • Training requisite of visiting public is analysed and demand-driven training programmes offered.
  • Water and soil samples collected with a fees of Rs.150 per sample, reports delivered within 5 to 6 hours.
  • Details of fish seed availability, stocking , fish feed information and other advisory services delivered.
  • Linkage with the line department to enlighten the farmers on Government schemes in fisheries.
  • Serving as channels, guiding the visitors to respective experts of the institute specialized in the area of query of the stakeholders.

Computer cell and Language Laboratory:


Thirty numbers of desktop computers are available in the lab for providing hands-on training to the students and for academic purposes. The computer cell also serve as language laboratory to improve the English proficiency of students.

Techno-exhibition hall:


  • Techno-exhibition hall serves as a reception facility of the institute. It exhibits the diorama of the institute, list of teaching staffs and R & D projects operated by the institute. The hall also have three aquarium glass tanks mounted in wooden stands to display important ornamental fish species and a LCD TV to project the important videos produced by the University during the visit of important delegates.

Seminar Hall


Hall capacity of 150 Nos with audio, LED TVs (2 Nos) and LCD projection facilities. The seminar hall also serves as auditorium for conducting official events of the institute. It also serves as a platform for the students to develop and exhibit their extra- curricular activities.

Achievements:

  • The department played a major role in making the institute as Nodal Training Institute (NTI) under the GOI scheme- “Aqua Clinic and Aquapreneurship Development Programme (ACADP)” implemented by MANAGE, Hyderabad and conducted two one month residential trainings in the year 2019 and 2020
  • From the first ACADP training [2019] batch, 10 participants received offer for financial support from Government of India to establish Aqua One Centers [AOC] in various districts of Tamil Nadu. Among them, three have successfully established AOC and efficiently operating it.

Current Focus:

  • To implement the sanctioned NADP project and establish an dedicated e-extension hub in the institute
  • To establish a strong linkage with the line department to enlighten the farmers on Government schemes in fisheries.
  • To serve as channels, guiding the visitors to respective experts of the institute specialized in the area of query of the stakeholders.
