Dr.M.G.R FC & RI, Ponneri organized Training on Enhancing the income of the Fishermen of Pulicat through Advanced Long Line and Gill Netting Techniques

Dr.M.G.R Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri, a constituent unit of Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University, organized a training on “Enhancing the income of the Fishermen of Pulicat through advanced long line and gill netting techniques” on 01.03.2021 for the benefit of Pulicat fishermen. Dr. B. Ahilan, Dean, Dr.M.G.R FC&RI, Ponneri and Convenor welcomed the gathering. The programme was inaugurated by Dr.G.Sugumar Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University (TNJFU) and other delegates by lighting the traditional lamp.

The Vice-Chancellor in his presidential address appreciated the Dean and faculty of the institute for organizing the event and informed the gathering about the importance of low energy fishing methods and Government’s initiatives to promote these methods for overall fisheries development of the state. The technical session of the training had a total of six presentation related to various aspects on the development of long line and gill net fishing. Prof. N. Neethiselvan, Director, DIVF, Ramanathapuram gave a lecture on “Role of DIVF, Ramanathapuram for promotion of fishing sector in Tamil Nadu”.  Dr.B.Sundaramoorthy, Dean, Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi, Mr.M.kalaiarasan, Assistant Professor, DIVF, Ramanathapuram, Dr.L.Vinothkumar, Assistant Professor, PPIFT, Mr.Dickson, Deep Sea Fisherman, Kanniyakumari, Mr.Loorthu Raj, President, Fishermen Co-operative Society Tharuvaikulam, Thoothukudi were the other experts who also delivered technical lectures. The training session was followed by a panel discussion in which the participants clarified their doubts. A total of 50 fishermen from Pulicat Coast participated in the event. The training was concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr.R.Velmurugan, Assistant Professor, DFT&FE and Organising Secretary of the Training Programme.
