The Department of Fisheries Economics was established during 1978 to offer courses on fisheries economics for undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes besides conducting research and extension activities. The Department of Fisheries Extension was established during September 1989 to offer undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in fisheries extension besides research and organising various extension activities to enhance the livelihood of fishers. The Department of Fisheries Information and Statistics was created during October 2014 to offer ICT and statistics courses for undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. As per the ICAR nomenclature, all the three departments have been merged and renamed as Department of Fisheries Extension, Economics and Statistics during December 2017. So far, 22 M.F.Sc. students in Fisheries Extension and 24 M.F.Sc., students in Fisheries Economics were passed out. Eight e-course contents were developed for the undergraduate programme. Apart from the academic programmes, this department operates many externally funded projects funded by DBT, ICSSR, NFDB, TNSCST, MSSRF, ICAR, Planning Commission, DoE, etc. The extension activities such as on-campus and off-campus training programmes, awareness programmes, demonstrations, exhibitions, pongal vizha, farm advisory services, etc., are being offered for the benefit of fishers.
In addition to this, the recently created Unit of Information Technology under the Department of Fisheries Extension, Economics and Statistics, FC&RI, Thoothukudi aspires to be a leading source of information for fishing and fish farming communities, fisheries entrepreneurs, fisheries students, policy makers, etc. The unit would provide data and information at its disposal available to various entities in Tamil Nadu in order to increase the transparency and efficiency to promote further research on needy areas of fisheries. The unit regularly issues various publications on the university website. Further, this unit collects and collates data and items of information from various sources, including Government reports, surveys, statistics, etc. The unit also establishes and maintains information systems, develops and applies methods for processing and presenting data & information and distributes within and outside by means of various channels. Among other items, the unit regularly publishes data, statistics and other reports on TNJFU’s website. This unit is also maintaining all IT database, secured Wi-Fi and internet connectivity for the college.
