REPORT ON THE WORLD TAXONOMIST APPRECIATION DAY 2022 - A SPECIAL LECTURES DELIVERED In commemoration of WORLD TAXONOMIST APPRECIATION DAY 2022

World Taxonomist Appreciation Day, March 19, was created in 2013 to make a point that the
work of the world’s biological taxonomists was largely unappreciated, even though it underpins our
fundamental understanding of the diversity of life. Taxonomy which is the practice and science
of classification really began as a science in the 18th century, with the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus,
whose naming system is still used. Taxonomic scientists follow rules that govern process of classification
and identification to ensure that their work is able to be adopted anywhere in the world. World Taxonomist
Appreciation Day is an occasion to show appreciation to taxonomists and systematists for all the work
they do.
The World Taxonomist Appreciation Day 2021 was organised at Fisheries College and Research
Institute, Thoothukudi by the Department of Fisheries Biology and Resource Management. A total of 120
participants were participated in this programme. The program was organized by the Dept. of Fisheries
Biology and Resource Management. The formal inauguration of this programme was commenced on
09:30 a.m. Mr. R. Durairaja, Assistant Professor and Head i/c Dept. of Fisheries Biology and Resource
Management has welcomed the gathering. The Deani/c, Dr. R. Santhakumar gave the presidential
address emphasized the importance of Taxonomy and he advised the need for conservation and
sustainability of Aquatic resources. Following the presidential address, Dr. V. K Venkataramani, former
Dean and Adjunct Professor has delivered a special lecture on “Principles of Taxonomy, Classical
taxonomy and Importance of Taxonomy”. He explained the history of taxonomy in the pre and post
Linnaean era, hierarchy of classification and binomial nomenclature in detail. He gave emphasis on the
taxonomist Carl Linnaeus, Charles Darwin and Joseph Nelson on this great occasion. He explained the
international body IUCN categorisation viz Extinct, Endangered and Vulnerable species with special
reference to the Gulf of Mannar region and he also advised the young scientist to take up research in the
family Sciaenidae and Mugilidae and also the principles to be followed in Taxonomy was explained in
detail. Dr. R. Saravanan, Senior Scientist, Mandapam Regional Centre, ICAR – CMFRI, Mandapam has
delivered a special lecture on “Taxonomy of hitherto neglected marine taxa” and explained detailed his
research experiences in the various aquatic animals such as jelly fish, sea urchin, sea cucumber and its
ecological imporatance. The programme came to end with Vote of Thanks delivered by Mr. C. Sudhan,
Assistant Professor, Department of Fisheries Biology and Resource Management. HoDs, staff and non-
teaching staff and students were also present. Mr. C. Sudhan, Assistant Professor served as Master of
Ceremony in this programme.

தூத்துக்குடி மீன்வளக்கல்லூரியில் மீன் வகை பாட்டியலாளர்களின் ஊக்குவிப்பு தினம் - 2022 நடத்தப்பட்டது

2013-ஆம் ஆண்டு மார்ச் 19ஆம் நாள் உலக வகைப்பாட்டியாளர்களின் ஊக்குவிப்பு தினமாக உருவாக்கப்பட்டது. இது உலகின் உயிரியல் வகை பிரித்தல் வல்லுநர்களின் பணி பெரும்பாலும் பாராட்டப்படவில்லை என்றாலும் இது இன வாழ்க்கையின் பன்முகத்தன்மை பற்றிய அடிப்படை புரிதலை நமக்கு உறுதிப்படுத்துகிறது. இம்மாதிரி வகைபிரித்தல் முறை 18ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் வாழ்ந்த தாவரவியலாளர் காரல் லின்னேயஸ் உருவாக்கிய முறையாகும். இதுவரை இதுவே பெயரிடும் முறையாக இதுவரை பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டு வருகின்றது.
வகைப்பாட்டியல் செய்யம் விஞ்ஞானிகள் தங்கள் பணியை உலகில் உள்ள அனைவரும் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள மற்றும் உறுதிப்படுத்த வகைப்பாடு மற்றும் அடையாளம் காணும் செயல்முறையை நிர்வகிக்கும் விதிகளைப் பின்பற்றி செயல்படுகின்றனர். இந்நாளை நாம் உலகத்தில் இருக்கும் அனைத்து வகைப்பாட்டியல் வல்லுநர்கள் மற்றும் அமைப்பு வல்லுநர்கள் அவர்கள் செய்யும் பணிகளுக்கு பாராட்டுத்தெரிவிக்கும் ஓர் சந்தர்ப்பமாகும். தூத்துக்குடி மீன்வளக்கல்லூரியில் மீன் வகைபாட்டியலாளர்களின் ஊக்குவிப்புதினம் 21.03.2022 அன்று தமிழ்தாய் வாழ்த்துடன் இனிதோ தொடங்கப்பட்டது. நாளுக்குநாள் குறைந்து மற்றும் அழிந்துவரும் மீன் இனங்களைப் பற்றிய அறிவு பொதுமக்களுக்கு மிக முக்கியமாகும். எனவே அவற்றை காத்திட நாம் பாதுகாப்பு முறைகளைக் கையாள வேண்டியது அவசியம். மேலும் மீன் வகைபாட்டியல் சம்பந்தப்பட்ட விஞ்ஞானிகளின் எண்ணிக்கைநாளுக்குநாள் குறைந்து வருவது நாம் அனைவரும் அறிந்ததே. எனவே இது சம்பந்தப்பட்ட விஞ்ஞானிகளை ஊக்குவிக்க வேண்டியது காலத்தின் கட்டாயமாகும். இதன் அடிப்படையில் மீன்வளக் கல்லூரியில் மீன்வகைபாட்டியலாளர்களின் ஊக்குவிப்புதினம் 21.03.2022 அன்று மீன்வள உயிரியல் மற்றும் வள மேலாண்மைத்துறையால் நடத்தப்பட்டது. இவ்விழாவில் விஞ்ஞானிகள் கல்லூரிஆசிரியர்கள்ர ஆராய்ச்சியாளர்கள் மற்றும் மாணவர்கள் அடங்கிய 120பேர் பங்கேற்றனர். விழாவில் மீன்வள உயிரியல் மற்றும் வள மேலாண்மைத் துறைதலைவர் (பொ)திரு.ரா.துரைராஜா உதவிப்பேராசிரியர் வரவேற்புரை வழங்கினார். பின்னர் கல்லூரி முதல்வர்(பொ) முனைவர் இரா.சாந்தகுமார் அவர்கள் தலைமையுரை வழங்கி சிறப்பித்தார். அவருடைய உரையில் மீன்வகை பாட்டியலின் முக்கியத்துவம் மற்றும் அதனை ஊக்குவிக்கவேண்டியதன் அவசியம் பற்றி விரிவாக எடுத்துரைத்தார். அதனைத் தொடர்ந்துமீன் வளக்கல்லூயின் முன்னாள் முதல்வரும் கௌரவ பேராசிரியருமான முனைவர் வி.கே.வெங்கடரமணி அவர்கள் “மீன் வகைப்பாட்டியியலின் கொள்கை மற்றும் அதனைச் சார்ந்த ஆராய்ச்சியாளர்கள் கட்டுரையாளர்கள் பற்றிய விரிவான வரலாற்று கருத்துக்களை பதிவு செய்தார் பாரம்பரிய முறைகளில் மீன்களை அடையாளம் காணுதல் மற்றும் வகைப்படுத்துதல். மேலும் செவுள் மீன்களின் வகைபாட்டியல் ஆராய்ச்சி பற்றிய நவீன யுக்திகள்” என்ற தலைப்பில் உரை நிகழ்த்தினார். மேலும் அழிந்துவரும் மற்றும் ஆபத்தான நிலையிலுள்ள மீன்களைப் பற்றி தெளிவாக விளக்கிக் கூறினார். மீன் வகைபாட்டியலில் சம்பந்தமப்பட்ட பல விஞ்ஞானிகளாகிய லினேயஸ்  பீட்டர்ஆர்ட்ரடி ஜோசப் நெல்சன் மற்றும் அரிஸ்டாட்டில் போன்றோர்களின் புதிய சாதனைகள் பற்றி எடுத்துரைத்தார். பின்னர் பன்னா மற்றும் மடவை மீன்களைக் குறித்து ஆராய்ச்சி மேற்கொள்ள இளம் விஞஞானிகளுக்கு அறிவுறுத்தினார். மேலும் முனைவர். இரா. சரவணன் முதுநிலை விஞ்ஞாணி மண்டல ஆராய்ச்சி நிறுவனம்ர மத்திய கடல் மீன்வள ஆராய்ச்சி நிறுவனம்ர மண்டபம் அவர்கள் கடல்வாழ் உயிரினங்களில் புறக்கணிக்கப்பட்ட நீர்வாழ் உயிரினங்களின் வகைப்பாட்டியலின் முக்கியத்துவத்தை எடுத்துரைத்தார். மேலும்.தான் மேற்கொண்ட பல்வேறு நீர்வாழ் உயிரினங்களின் ஆராய்ச்சிகளின் கண்டுபிடிப்புகளை மற்றும் முடிவுகள் ஆகியன மாணவர்களுக்கு தௌ;ளத் தெளிவாக எடுத்துரைத்தார். இறுதியாக உதவிபேராசிரியர் திரு.ச.சுதன நன்றியுரை வழங்கினார். மேலும் இந்நிகழ்ச்சியில் முனைவர் இரா.சாந்தகுமார் முதல்வர் (பொறுப்பு) துறைத் தலைவர்கள ;மற்றும் ஆசிரியர் மற்றும் ஆசரிரியர்அல்லாத துறைபணியாளர்கள் மற்றும் பெரும்பாலானமாணவர்கள் பங்குபெற்று இந்நிகழ்ச்சியை சிறப்பித்தனர். இறுதியாக நாட்டுப்பண்ணுடன் விழா இனிது நிறைவுற்றது.
