An Awareness programme on “Cage Culture of Fishes in Inland Water Bodies to Improve the Livelihood of Fishers” was held at Thiruvallur on 15.10.2015. Dr.N.Felix, Officer incharge of Fisheries Institute of Technology and Training(FITT),Chennai has organized this programme and welcomed the gathering.
Totally 60 participants from various Inland fishermen societies in and around Poondi reservoir participated in this programme. In the Special address, Dr.A.R.T.Arasu, Former Principal Scientist and Head, Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture(CIBA),Chennai briefed about the packages of practices to be followed for successful cage culture by the fishermen societies. Prof. Baskaran Manimaran, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Fisheries University released a pamphlet on “Cage culture of fishes in Inland waterbodies” and delivered presidential address. In the Presidential address, the Vice-Chancellor invited the members of the fishermen societies to come forward to culture the fishes in the reservoirs. He further emphasized that a change of thought in fishermen from capturing fish to culturing fish is the need of the hour. After the inaugural function, the participants were taken to cages site at Poondi and the fish culture activities were explained in the cage itself. Two lectures on the construction and installation of cage culture and cage culture of fishes were delivered for the benefit of the participants.
