Every year, National Fish Farmers Day is celebrated to honour and support the significant contributions of fish farmers to the nation’s blue economy, recognising the key role that fish farmers play in providing food security for India, creating rural employment, and fostering the development of a sustainable aquaculture sector. This occasion also marks the groundbreaking success of Dr. K.H.Alikunhi and Dr. Hiralal Chaudhury in revolutionising inland aquaculture by demonstrating induced breeding in Indian major carps using the hypophysation technique in 1957. Empowering the fish farmers of India who hold the spirit of progress and technology in the aquaculture sector is crucial to driving the blue revolution. The fish farmers are provided with a rising wave of opportunities to pursue
aquaculture practices with the governmental backing. The Department of Fisheries, Government of India, along with the Government of Tamil Nadu, is providing financial assistance for the inland fish farmers for the construction of new freshwater finfish hatcheries, fish rearing ponds, grow-out ponds including inputs, freshwater bio-floc ponds, Re-Circulatory Aquaculture System (RAS), and fish feed mills. As a higher educational & research institution, Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University is also dedicated to the welfare of fish farmers and renders notable services to fish farmers across the state of Tamil Nadu. During this year, following 18 technologies were developed and released for the benefit of farmers.

The University is committed to developing farmer-friendly breeding and seed production protocols for Pacu, Anabas, Loach, Murrel, Seabass, and Mud Crab. Specialised feeds supplementing therapeutic bioactive compounds will be developed to prevent diseases in Penaeus vannamei and important cultivable fishes. TNJFU encourages public-private partnerships (PPP) in ornamental fish culture, feed production, seaweed culture, live feed culture, and shrimp seed production. The incubation units in TNJFU cater to the needs of the stakeholders in the development of value-added fisheries products and seaweed-based products. Through a combination of financial assistance, infrastructure development, technological support, and market access initiatives, the livelihoods of fish farmers can significantly improve, resulting in the development of the nation’s fisheries sector and sustainable management of aquaculture resources.
